2023 Petit Verdot
Historically used as a blending grape to impart color, tannin, and aromatics, Petit Verdot rarely takes center stage—but the 2023 vintage offered a unique opportunity to showcase this powerful Bordeaux varietal on its own, and we embraced it. Grown on the windswept hills of our Coombsville estate, it reveals a bold yet elegant character, with brooding aromatics of black plums, wild blackberries, lilacs, blueberry cobbler, and star anise. As the wine opens, layers of kirsch, dried violets, cigar box, incense, and spiced figs unfold, leading into a dynamic palate of red and black cherries, spiced plums, raspberries, crushed stone, fresh herbs, and hints of graham cracker. The texture is decadent, with finely grained, fruit-forward tannins and a core of cool-climate acidity that drives a nuanced, juicy finish. This bottling is a testament to both the meticulous work in vineyard and cellar, and the untapped potential of this underutilized varietal.
